Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Rein Vanilla come from?

Rein Ceylon Vanilla is handpicked from the highlands of Sri Lanka.

What is the best type of vanilla extract?

The best type of Vanilla extract is the one that has been extracted from natural vanilla beans and has no artificial colouring or flavour enhances added.

What is the difference between extract and essence?

Vanilla extract is a preparation that draws out the substance containing vanilla in the most concentrated manner. It is 100% natural, using pure vanilla beans without compromising the over 200 flavour compounds present in vanilla. Essence, on the other hand, is artificial, with nature-identical flavours infused into chemicals and refined to make essence, which can be unhealthy.

How do I use vanilla beans?

Split the Vanilla bean from the middle with a sharp knife and use the back of the sharp side of the knife to remove the inside content to use it for your dish directly.

In addition, the empty pod can be used when boiling milk or making custards.

Can I use Vanilla extract for savoury dishes?

Of course yes! Chefs worldwide use it for marinating meat or even in salad dressings.

Why is Vanilla such an expensive spice?

Vanilla is derived from the pods of the Vanilla orchid which requires hand pollination and is labour intensive. These orchids take years to mature and produce the pods which require months of curing once it is harvested. These plants are also highly sensitive to climatic conditions where they thrive in tropical conditions with specific temperature, humidity and soil conditions. And finally, the increase in demand and vanilla being a key flavouring agent in many foods and products make it such an expensive spice.

What are the benefits of using Ceylon Vanilla in cooking and baking?

Ceylon Vanilla offers a unique flavour profile with hints of cocoa and floral notes, enhancing the taste of both sweet and savoury dishes. Its complex aroma can elevate the overall sensory experience of your culinary creations.
